Bike
Orbit Routier frame - 531ST touring bike built around 26" wheels, Chris King headset, Nitto stem, 3T Morphe drop handlebars, ESGE mudguards, Tubus racks
Wheels - Mavic F519 rims laced to Shimano XT hubs with DT spokes. Handbuilt by myself (thanks Jobst) no retruing needed.
Tyres - Vredestein Spiders 26" x 1.9" semi-slick, no punctures and they appear unmarked. A folding Schwalbe Marathon XR was carried as a spare. Most other cyclists I met were using Marathons.
Drivetrain - Shimano XT 8sp chainset 22/32/43, cassette 11-28, LX derailleurs, XT bottom bracket
Brakes - Suntour Cantilevers with Kool-Stop "Salmon" blocks. Dia-Compe 287 levers
Saddle - Brooks Conquest (with springs!) on a Suntour XC seatpost
Pedals - Time ATACs (excellent)
Spares - Folding tyre, tubes, spokes, brake blocks, cables, chain links. Not needed. A small bottle of lube was carried and used frequently.
Tools - Topeak Alien XS, spoke key, chain tool, adjustable spanner, Hypercracker, cone spanners, small headset spanner, puncture kit & tyre boot.
Panniers - Carradice Super C
Photography
Pentax LX body, 28mm & 70 - 210 zoom, Fuji Reala 100ASA print film
Map & Guidebooks
Map - Landmaelingar Islands 1:500,000 - the entire country on one sheet at an adequate scale for cycling or driving.
Guidebooks - I carried a copy of the "Lonely Planet" guidebook which was OK. I tore the book in half as I wasn't going to Greenland or the Faroes on this trip. The Insight/Discovery Channel book is excellent with good information on the history and background of Iceland together with plenty of tourist information and wonderful pictures. It's too heavy to carry on a bike though! The Landmark Visitors Guide is also worth reading.
Misc
GSM phone (worked all around the coast, not in the interior), binoculars, SW radio, first-aid kit, wash-kit
